The breeze blowing through the window is a clear sign that summer 2026 is here. As the weather warms up and we start wearing our favorite sandals, the most common concern I hear from my clients at the salon is about "toenail care."

When I first began my journey as a nail artist 28 years ago, many people thought nail care was just for aesthetic purposes. However, through my years of working with countless hands and feet, I’ve realized that a beautiful, vibrant polish looks even better when applied to a healthy foundation. Many of you want to wear stunning pedicures this summer, but the true secret lies in the health of the toenails themselves. To help you keep your nails clean and healthy even on the days you can't visit the salon, I have compiled a simple, effective home care routine.

1. Timing is Half the Result: The Golden Hour for Trimming

•Trimming After a Shower: Many people make the mistake of trimming their toenails whenever they get a quick chance. However, the absolute best time to trim them is immediately after showering. This is not just because they are clean, but because the nails have absorbed enough moisture to reach their most flexible state.

•Preventing Protein Splits: Trimming your toenails when they are dry and brittle can cause the tough protein layers to split, crack, or shatter due to the sudden physical shock of the clipper. By clipping them when they are soft and hydrated, you will achieve a much smoother finish with zero structural damage.

2. The Beauty of the "White Border": Don't Trim Too Short

•Leaving a Protective Cushion: "Shouldn't I cut my toenails as short as possible to keep them clean?" is a question I hear quite often at the salon. My answer is always a firm "No." Trimming your toenails too short can be incredibly harmful, as the skin under your nail plate is highly sensitive to external friction.

•Preventing Pain and Infection: You should always leave about 1 to 2 mm of the white border at the tip of your toenail to act as a protective cushion. Cutting them past this line increases the risk of painful bacterial infections and can cause sharp pain whenever you walk or wear closed-toe shoes.

3. Shape Matters for Toenails: Always Remember to Cut Straight

•The Danger of Rounding: While rounding your fingernails to match the natural curve of your fingertips is beautiful, toenails require a completely different approach. Toenails are under constant, heavy pressure from your shoes and body weight whenever you walk or run.

•Preventing Painful Ingrowns: If you cut your toenails into a rounded shape, the sharp edges are much more likely to dig in and grow directly into your skin, causing painful ingrown toenails. Always trim your toenails straight across, leaving the corners intact, and gently smooth only the very edges with a file.

4. A Little Luxury at Home: Deep Moisturizing and Cuticle Care

•Nurturing the Cuticle Barrier: Healthy, resilient toenails require consistent moisture and cuticle care. Dry, cracked cuticles can severely hinder healthy nail growth and cause painful hangnails to form. Taking time to treat your feet to deep hydration is the foundation of long-lasting summer beauty.

•The Ultimate Heat Therapy: At the salon, I always emphasize the power of intense moisture retention. I have previously detailed a simple, highly effective home moisturizing routine that you can easily follow with items you already have in your house.

5. Daily Habits for Maintenance: Keeping Your Pedicure Vibrant

•Moisture Control for Summer Feet: Once you've finished your care, the key is how well you maintain it throughout the summer heat. In warmer weather, feet can easily become humid due to sweat. After spending a long day outside, try wiping off any sweat from your sandals and letting your feet breathe completely.

•Reducing Friction and Pressure: If you tend to sweat a lot, try wearing soft toe socks at home to absorb moisture between the toes. Additionally, pay close attention to the straps of your summer sandals. If they constantly press against the edges of your nails, it can chip your polish or even cause physical nail deformation.

6. The Final Touch: Utilizing the Right Professional Tools

•Smoothing Out Rough Edges: Using only a metal nail clipper will inevitably leave a rough, jagged edge on your toenails. To prevent this, always follow up your clipping by using a dedicated nail file to smooth the edges.

•Perfect Filing Technique: Make sure to file gently in one single direction rather than sawing back and forth. A smooth, sealed edge prevents your toenails from snagging on bedsheets or socks and drastically reduces the chances of your nails breaking during daily activities.

[Closing]

Summer is a season when your feet deserve a relaxing vacation, too. Instead of just covering up damaged nails with bright colors, try managing them from the basics with the routines I've shared today. Beautiful, vibrant colors will shine even more on a healthy, strong foundation.
